All Quiet on the Western Front
1930 | War | USA | Directed by Lewis Milestone
Overview
The first great anti war film, made while the trenches were fresh. German boys march off to patriotic cheers and meet gas, shellfire, and mud. The camera put viewers inside the trench for the first time, and the butterfly finale still lands. Banned and burned in Germany within three years. Won the first Best Picture Oscar for a sound film.
