The Maltese Falcon
1941 | Noir | USA | Directed by John Huston
Overview
Huston directed his first film and defined film noir in one move. Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade, Mary Astor lying beautifully, Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre circling a jeweled falcon. Shot lean and fast, mostly in interiors, with dialogue used as weaponry. The hard boiled detective movie reached final form here, and Bogart became Bogart.
