Akira
1988 | Animation | Japan | Directed by Katsuhiro Otomo
Overview
Neo Tokyo animation landmark: biker gangs, psychic children, and a military state. Otomo hand drew detail at a scale Japan had never funded, with a palette of over three hundred colors, and the animation still outpaces most CGI crowds. The West discovered anime largely through it. The bike slide and the Tetsuo mutation sequences are canon. Manga adapted by its own author. Animation as maximalism.
