Pather Panchali
1955 | Drama | India | Directed by Satyajit Ray
Overview
Ray, a former illustrator, mortgaged everything to film the Bengali classic about a boy, his sister, and a train in a poor village. No stars, no studio: village life, monsoon, an old aunt, and a score by Ravi Shankar. The 1956 Cannes Grand Prix introduced India to world cinema. First film of the Apu Trilogy and a monument of humanism.
