The Big Sleep
1946 | Noir | USA | Directed by Howard Hawks
Overview
Bogart and Bacall trade innuendo at machine gun pace in the noir where even the novelists could not explain who killed the chauffeur. Hawks valued momentum over logic and got away with it. The bookstore field glasses scene and the racehorse small talk are pure seduction by dialogue. Chandler plot, Hawks attitude: plot optional.
