The General
1926 | Comedy | USA | Directed by Buster Keaton
Overview
Keaton plays a Confederate railroad engineer chasing his stolen locomotive in the greatest of silent comedies. Real trains, real stunts, one deadpan face. The rockslide onto the tracks and the collapsing bridge were staged and shot for real, full scale. Keaton comedy is architecture and momentum, gags built from physical logic rather than pratfalls. Alfred Hitchcock named it a favorite.
