Modern Times
1936 | Comedy | USA | Directed by Charles Chaplin
Overview
The Tramp fights the machine age: feeding machines, assembly lines, and a nervous breakdown. Chaplin held out against talkies for a decade and made a silent film in 1936 that outsold most talkies. The roller skating blindfold scene and the singing finale, his first heard voice, bookend the argument. Comedy as social protest, and still the definitive image of man versus factory.
