The Great Dictator
1940 | Comedy | USA | Directed by Charles Chaplin
Overview
Chaplin plays both a Jewish barber and Adenoid Hynkel, dictator of Tomainia, and dances with a balloon globe while the world burned. Made while America was still neutral, it mocked Hitler to his face when almost nobody else would. The final speech, four minutes pleading for sanity, broke the Tramp character forever. Comedy at its most morally serious.
